When NFL rookie Matthew Golden became a first round draft pick he went viral for vowing to buy his grandma a house before anything else. And luckily for me, someone on his team had seen Moving Home, the film we made for REMAX the previous year. They reached out to REMAX to see if there was something we could make—and of course there was.
This became a special chance for this former d3 athlete to make a sports doc. We realized we couldn’t just do that so we pitched a social campaign that would kick off before we dropped the doc to engage our REMAX audience: other real estate agents. So the hero of our social campaign became Nimesh Patel, the REMAX real estate agent with a team in Matthew’s hometown who actually found his grandma a house—and we were filming the whole process.

BTS Fun fact: We had always planned on gifting the family something sweet at the end of this process—but we didn’t know they would close on a house while we filmed the doc. It was all actually coming together while we were filming in Houston so I ended up digitally painting their old family homestead that Penny’s father had built, and where Matthew grew up. We snuck off set to Walmart to get a frame while a PA got the print, and I assembled it in the school parking lot where we had video village so it would be ready to give to Nimesh after the surprise. That’s the kind of on-set magic I love to be a part of. With a little clever DIY-ing, and a extra cup of coffee you can really bring a whole room to tears.
